“Butterbean” Esch is one of the most popular and entertaining fighters
in the world today. Instantly recognizable by his bald head,
excessive size and weight (370 lbs.) and his signature red, white and
blue American flag fight trunks, Butterbean is quite the character.
Opponents know him better by his devastating punch power (75% of
Butterbean’s wins were by way of knockout) A native of Jasper,
Alabama, Esch is a hard working blue collar type. As such, he is
truly “The People’s Champion” who is living out the American Dream.
Butterbean first made an impact as a fighter in Toughman competitions
where he earned the nickname “King of The 4 Rounders” as Toughman
bouts generally consisted of 4 rounds. The “Butterbean” name came as
he was dieting to get into fighting shape and butterbeans were a
staple of his diet. He was eating so many of them, that a friend
remarked, “You are going to turn into a butterbean!” The rest is
history. His popularity continued to grow as he developed a big cult
following.
Many doubted that Butterbean would be able to duplicate his Toughman
success when he entered the professional boxing ranks in 1994. He
silenced his critics and was crowned IBA Super Heavyweight Champion in
1996. He proved to have more stamina than anyone would believe
possible when he lasted 10 rounds with legendary boxer Larry Holmes in
2002.
Recently, Butterbean has beaten the odds yet again, earning success
and respect in the world of Mixed Martial Arts Fighting. To date, he
has a winning MMA record of 7-2-1. Victories include wins over Leo
Sylvester, Walley Keenboom, and the very tough Wesley “Cabbage”
Correira who also battled Tank Abbott in a recent fight. His only MMA
loss came in his debut in Japan as part of K-1 Dynamite against Genki
Sudo, a master of submission techniques. Butterbean has been nearly
unstoppable since. |
